A Portrait of High Net Worth Donors of Color

Hali Lee has dedicated her efforts to shedding light on the experiences, perspectives, and motivations of high net worth donors from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Her report draws upon in-depth interviews with over 150 individual BIPOC donors across the United States, providing a comprehensive understanding of their philanthropic endeavors.
During this session, Hali Lee will share key insights and findings from her extensive research, emphasizing the unique contributions and challenges faced by BIPOC donors in the philanthropic landscape. She will explore the motivations behind their giving, the impact of their philanthropy on communities, and the barriers they have encountered along the way. By amplifying the voices and experiences of BIPOC donors, Hali Lee's work aims to inspire meaningful change within the field of philanthropy.

Hali Lee
Founding Partner, Radiant Strategies
Hali Lee is delighted to have been co-builder of a few pieces of philanthropic infrastructure. She is founding partner of Radiant Strategies. She co-founded the Donors of Color Network, was on the co-design team for Philanthropy Together, and is the founder of the Asian Women Giving Circle. She is lead author of Philanthropy Always Sounds Like Someone Else: A Portrait of High Net-Worth Donors of Color and is building Freedom School for Philanthropy which has piloted with Fidelity Charitable U/HNW DAF holders, the philanthropy team at the Gates Foundation, and with a cross-network group of wealthy women donors. She is writing a book on collective giving titled THE BIG WE which will be published in 2025 by Zando/ Sweet July Press.
Hali was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in Kansas City. She graduated from Princeton University, studied Buddhism at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, and received a Masters in Social Work from New York University. Hali lives in Brooklyn, NY along with her dear husband, three college-age children, two cats and a big dog. In her free time, Hali loves to travel, read, play tennis and keep rooftop honeybees. In 2021, Hali was profiled in Forbes 50 Over 50: Impact.
