We will all have that moment in our careers where a gift that seemed to be going well suddenly goes wrong or where a completed gift, either one of your own or one by a predecessor, is now clearly in trouble. While our training is often around how to set-up gifts correctly, we rarely get a peek at how to handle things when the unexpected occurs and things start to go awry. In this session, we’ll share real examples of gifts we and our peers have experienced and share the fact patterns that highlight red flags to look for, how to build gift policies and procedures that help you vet gifts and donors, and how to communicate with donors about mistakes and challenges in ways that build confidence and trust.
In a profession where we’re often expected to be experts in a lot of things (Real estate! Stock! Taxes! Art! Jewelry! Stamps?), how do you navigate the complexity and figure out a path forward when it seems to be going wrong?
